Nobel Laureate Amartya Sen has approached the Calcutta High Court against the notice issued by Visva Bharati University asking him to vacate 13 decimals of land at his Santiniketan residence.
The central university claims that the land is under "illegal possession" of Sen, and it will evict him if he does not vacate it by May 6. However, in his petition, economist Amartya Sen argued that the land was given on a 99-year lease to his father Ashutosh Sen in 1943.
Meanwhile, protests continue around the university campus against the eviction order, which has received support from Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
The case will be heard by the bench of Justice Bibhas Ranjan Dey. Founded by Rabindranath Tagore in 1921, Vishwabharati is the only central university in West Bengal.
